‘Onycophora’ by Sigrid Macdonald is a luscious exploration of colour and texture, reminiscent of the claws and feet of the velvet worms that influence this piece. The predatory nature of these creatures is reflected in sharp repetition of the artist’s marks, while their soft bodies can be felt in the underlying palette. The work, viewed whole, seems representative of the rainforest moss cushions and leaf litter where onycophora dwell. It is a juxtaposition of cool tones with warm highlights that I wish I could crawl inside of.
